Authentic change starts organically and one block at a time. The change Chicago needs is inside all of us. I encourage all of our volunteers to join the "One Block at a Time" initiative with fellow Chicagoans who are committed to being involved at the block level. At the outset, we will be cleaning up one neighborhood block per month. Activities will range from mowing lawns, picking up trash, raking leaves, spreading mulch, shoveling snow, and working with residents to create new and unique block club signs that reflect their values.
Once each month, we will work together to beautify an entire city block. Regardless if it is on the north, south, east, or west side, we will mobilize in an effort to make the block look better than it did before we left. This also gives our explorers an opportunity to be civically engaged.
The first official activity of the One Block at a Time initiative will be on Saturday, October 8th. We will meet on the block at 5536 S. King Drive, where we will be painting the second floor at the RTW Veterans Center. Also, please bring what you can to assist the homeless veterans, such as paper plates, plastic cups, spices, dish detergent, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. There is a great need, so any donation will be appreciated.
